So What Was 'Paranormal Activity's Original Ending?
10.11.09 By: William Goss
Well, congrats are in order to Paramount for slyly marketing its low-budget pick-up, Paranormal Activity, to bona fide box office success with $7.1 million on a mere 159 screens, with a wider release still to come. But many of the fans savvy enough to seek it out are by now aware that Activity's ending wasn't always as it stands now. In fact, the film runs about ten minutes shorter between its late '07/early '08 festival screenings and its current cut.
So, to answer the questions that I and others fortunate enough to have seen the original version have been fielding, we'll be taking a look at as many differences as we can remember between the two, not to mention the further rumblings of what was different in test screenings for the film.
Naturally, this means spoilers. I know, it says as much right there in the headline, but for the sake of covering our butts, let's make this clear: a spoiler warning for everything post-jump.
There, that ought to do it.
I SAID SPOILERS!
The daytime differences: This is where I felt the film got its biggest improvement. The set-up is brisker and better now, the psychic shows up maybe a bit earlier and thus seems less arbitrary at making the wheels move when we're not in the bedroom, and the couple themselves are friskier and funnier (I'm pretty sure that Micah gets no sex in the original cut, whereas the camera is set on the nightstand here before being turned off for some hanky-panky). In this version, there are two added scenes, in which Katie's keys are heard thrown around at night and found on the floor the next morning, and an encounter with a broken picture and breath on Katie's neck, taking place in plain daylight and helping to up the ante as to when this entity is willing to mess with them.
In a recent interview with our Peter Hall, director Oren Peli said that they shot nearly 70 hours of footage originally and then went back to re-shoot stuff. I'd bet that any added relationship bits came from the original footage; any extra scares were re-shot scenes. Also: Katie's voice towards the end gets a digital touch-up to sound more possessed when she just wants to sleep all day and insists that everything is going to be okay.
The nighttime differences: I suspect that some of the attacks were shuffled around in order to build more in terms of intensity. Most notable was that the sheet on their bed rising and falling took place around the 70-minute mark now, on the night before Katie gets dragged. I'm fairly certain that bit took place much earlier in the original cut, maybe a half-hour in, but it makes more sense as placed here.
Also: each scene where the demon enters the bedroom is now accompanied by an obviously ominous rumbling on the film's soundtrack, serving as a Pavlovian cue for audiences to stop texting and sit up.
The current ending: Every version of the climax that I've heard about has Micah dashing downstairs after Katie is dragged out of the bed/room, where some sort of off-screen ruckus takes place and only a bloody Katie returns. In this version, Katie tosses Micah's body at the camera from the hallway (a great money shot, I'll admit, albeit one given away in the trailer), kneels down beside his body to either sniff or lick it, and then approaches the camera before smiling and then lunging at the lens. A title card informs us that Micah's body was found on whatever date, and that Katie's whereabouts are still unknown...
A little too Hollywood cliffhanger-y for my tastes, but it plays better on the screen than I'd heard.
The original ending: This time, Micah stays downstairs as Katie returns to the bedroom, covered in blood and now holding a knife. She proceeds to rock on the floor next to the bed for something like two days straight.* We hear a friend (the girl who offered that Katie stay at her place, I'm guessing) leave a message on their answering machine, wondering where they are. She later stops by, presumably finds Micah dead downstairs, screams and leaves. The police then show up later, with Katie only awakening from her catatonic state as they come up the stairs, with guns drawn. She's covered in blood, holding a knife and very confused as to what's going on, and so the officers proceed to fire on her. The title card then dedicates the film to the couple's memory.
This one is a bit anti-climactic, yes, but I think it's a bit more tragic that Katie's been tormented all her life, only to face an unwitting death such as this.
The alternate ending(s): Now, several endings were shot after the film was picked up. The only one of those that I've seen described anywhere was screened maybe once at a test screening, and Peli suggests that we may see it yet on the DVD. In this version, Micah dies downstairs, bloody Katie returns to the bedroom with knife in hand, and she proceeds to slit her own throat in front of the camera (without looking right into it).
I personally prefer this one because Micah makes a gesture with a knife in the kitchen very early on, suggesting that whatever the problem is, they'll [slicing motion] take care of it. That might've made for a nice bookend, and would've been disturbing regardless.
*The trailer shows a shot of this as well. That's right -- they used a bit from both endings to promote the film.
UPDATE! (10/28/09) Here's the original ending!

I seriously hated that they used the ending in the trailer. The entire movie I'm waiting for Micah to get thrown at the camera.

I'm just glad I didn't watch the trailer.

EXACTLY, because I was waiting for that I knew it was gonna happen, would have been MUCH more scared had I not known.

As you may remember, they did the same exact thing with the trailer for 'Quarantine'. The whole time watching, I was waiting for the woman to be dragged off into the darkness. The problem is that the trailer editors are given the footage without knowing how the full story is actually being cut together, so all they're doing is looking for the coolest most dynamic shots to entice you into seeing the movie.

I think the theatrical ending (the one with the thrown body) is the most laughable ending to any movie I have ever seen. The two days of rocking back and forth is creepy and great, not to mention that right before the cops come up the stairs the light in the hall closet turned on and off, a nice touch.

i think everyone was.

I KNOW it was the saaaame for me now man. Just like in quarintine where you see the main character getting dragged away face first on the ground into the dark whilst breaking-off her finger-nails tring not to get dragged away...ya

I liked what "A Guy" said on 10-25 ... I didn't see this in theaters so I haven't seen the ending when Micha gets thrown, however my friend did have the one with the rocking ending, and yes, the light before the cops came up was a very good addition. Makes you think ... it's left her, who's next? I would love to see all the different endings though, because just like everyone else, I thought the slicing in the beginning was foreshadowing too, i expected them to commit suicide at some points
Cokeeat 11-30-2009
In reply to Emily,
It was initially foreshadowing as in an earlier ending, she cuts her throat in front of the camera. I haven't heard much more than that but i also heard that the demon shows itself when she does so.

I know! Every time it was night, I was waiting 4 the demon to throw him. But, Katie did it at the end which surprised me, it was a good movie anyway.

I completely agree that the proposed ending featuring Katie slitting her own throat would have been preferred. I even felt when I saw the film for the first time that the scene with Micah holding the knife was foreshadowing for something.
The current theatrical ending takes a conventional Hollywood horror out, which works against the rest of the film's unconventional methods. The use of CGI in the last shot, when the rest of the film uses virtually none, felt out of place. I was also put off by the fact that they say her body has still not been found. For a film that felt so grounded in a paranormal reality, that drew me in and gripped me in its demon claw from start to near finish, I was taken out of it in the last few moments...no matter how brief they were.
That's not to say that it unraveled the whole film for me. It just felt a bit inconsistent with what were otherwise extremely creative and effective methods of terror.
However, It does sound like over-all that the reshoots and add-ons improved the film's pacing, tension and ability to scare the living bejesus out of America. And that is saying a lot, seeing how "bejesus" is a word that I have not used since I was a child, which was coincidentally the last time I remembered being scared this much by a movie.

I completely agree, had she slit her throught it would have went with the movie very well. But i had another idea on what might have pleased the theature a bit more, had she thown mika into the camra and when she went up she had the knife, (which would explain more on how mika died instead of trying to find out what exactly Katie's method of killing mika was.) and went to mika's body, did the whole crazy b!tch thing to his dead body looked into the camra said "everythings going to be ok now" and proceded to slit her throught. its a little on the demonted side but i figure it would have gone with the movie very well.

I saw the original cut, and have to say it still scared the holy saint out of me, the original tho seeming to drag before to much activity starts bases more towards peoples clames when facing real demonic posesions. Starting young and not being dangerous until later after provoked, the climax not happening till Katie has finally hit her bottom, wich is closer to actual claims. The one set for the general public turned more Blair witch for me with an out of context ending. If u can I would recomend watching both to see the details that the second one seems lacking for me anyway!
wilhemat 11-19-2009
exactly, plus though the movie, it was more like blare witch where you just found the camera, it was more like you were observers. still the end of the movie made it more like an interaction with the audience.
Terra Kingat 10-11-2009
I prefer the ending as it is...with Micah thrown at the camera and then having Katie coming in, licking (or whatever she did,) his body and then the horrible look into the camera. It enforces the idea that this demonic possession was escalated by all the things Micah did, especially the camera.
A seriously good movie, no matter which way it ended. I do hope all endings and tons of unseen footage makes it to the DVD.

I agree. I actually thought the ending made a lot of sense within the context of the demon behavior escalating further and further, particularly with the gradual possession of Katie.
Smanat 10-17-2009
exactly, you hit the nail on the head. This movie especially the last 15 minutes scared the crap out of me. The best part was the anticipation. the camara fast forwarding was great. Blair witch was boring, I just never "got it." I came into this movie not knowing anything about it and, when I saw that it was going to be like blair witch and cloverfield i was so disapointed. However, it turned into the most scariest movie I have ever seen.
Warrenat 10-18-2009
Blair Witch was great because it used an hr trying to set up one great horrifying scene, which paying attention throughout was very important because they set up the story of the man who made children stand in the corner. This movie was the opposite, where they used a bunch of horrifying scenes to set up an somewhat anti-climatic ending... in the sense of it being so unrealistic, when the rest of the movie was so realistic. Usually when i leave a good horror, i want to remain frightened for at least the rest of the night, like i did when i saw The Strangers, but the cgi, and her jumping at the camera just for the hollywood ending, removed me from the connection i made and i left unafraid. very good movie, but i left disappointed and wanting more.......... actually, the ending just seemed like another timely escalated scare
sashaat 10-18-2009
I completely agree. The ending how it is, is perfect.
