3-D

There are a view things that genuinely terrify me when it comes to horror films: 3-D, Nic Cage and Todd Farmer. Despite Nic Cage's AMAZING performance in The Wicker Man remake, where he spent a good portion of the film dressed in a bear suit and punching women in the face, the man simply does not give off a horror vibe. 3-D is, in my opinion, a complete waste of time, and Todd Farmer just bugs me. I mean, i enjoyed Jason X, but it certainly wasn't because of his script (though it was a Hell of a lot better than My Bloody Valentine 3-D.) Naturally, it was only a matter of time before the stars aligned and all three managed to find their way into the same film.

The film in question is the Patrick Lussier-helmed Drive Angry, which Shock Till You Drop reports has officially cast Christa Campbell, the uber-sexy actress who has made appearances in films such as Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep and the Day of the Dead remake, to co-star with not only Nic Cage, but David Morse and Amber Heard as well. Despite my apprehension, after reading the synopsis of the film my curiosity was piqued.

Nic Cage stars as Milton, a convicted felon whose goal is to track down those who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter. Along the way the blood flies and the body count piles up. No word on whether or not he'll ask John Malkovich to give him back the bunny.

Ridiculous? Yes. But worthy of a look if only because Nic Cage is hilarious when he tries to act angry. Cage's character is described as being driven by rage, and after watching the video below, I REALLY hope he channels that performance. "Not the beeeeeeeeeeeeeees!"



Drive angry is set to be released on February 11th, 2011, and begins shooting in Shreveport, LA this month.

Am I the only who thinks 3-D horror films are a waste of time and money?

While some films may lend themselves to the technology (such as Burst, which is about exploding humans), the effect is usually lost on me. In the end, it almost seems like a distraction to prevent the audience from realizing your story is formulaic and conventional. The effect is lost once the film hits DVD, and although Blu Ray technology can emulate 3-D quite well, the overall impact is diminished considerably.

Given the recent spate of horror films being filmed in 3-D, it comes as no surprise that the Saw franchise will venture into the third dimension with 2010's Saw VII. Shock reports that the seventh installment in the seemingly never-ending franchise will feature a longer production time and be more expensive ... due to the conversion to 3-D.

Jaws is the best beast, obviously, but man oh man do I have a hankering for movies in which real animals eat real people ... real nastily. You didn't want to be in my way if Alligator, Grizzly, Orca, or Piranha was on a television when I was a kid, which is why I've been pretty psyched about the combination of A) a Piranha remake, B) in 3-D, and C) directed by the guy who did High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes. It was highly unlikely that Alex Aja was going to go PG-13 on his Piranha remake, and BD.com now has the photos to prove it.
