The Horrors of Hulu: Today's Pick 3

As a movie junkie, I am a big supporter of Hulu. And frankly, I am sick to death of the complaints I keep hearing about it: "the movies are mostly crap" or "it's hard to watch on your computer" or "what is Hulu and why are you going door to door handing out literature on it?" It all gets pretty tiring. But I suppose I am in a prime position to maximize Hulu's benefits.

I have some of the greatest video stores in the world at my disposal, as well as streaming Netflix on my XBox. So for me, Hulu represents a fun third option that bears no financial obligations or time constraints. To wit, I have scoured the feature horror films available on Hulu today and put together a Vincent Price triple threat: House on Haunted Hill, Last Man on Earth, and Dr. Phibes Rises Again.

This Week's Discs: 'Grace', 'Fear Itself', and a Ton of Classic Blu-rays

I've gotten behind on my usually-faithful upkeep of a monthly DVD guide, so when Weinberg sent a long a list of all the titles hitting shelves today, I was a little overwhelmed. My wallet has been taking a pounding lately, and this new crop of catalog films newly minted for Blu-ray is certainly not going to let up on the beat down.

Best of the New Releases: Grace, "Fear Itself"
Paul Solet's pregnancy horror film Grace has already been covered here and there on HorrorSquad, but I'll re-cap: I don't like it, Weinberg loves it, and Goss likes it, but doesn't love it. The Blu-ray has been available for the past few weeks exclusively at Best Buy, but today marks the expansion of the both the Grace Blu and DVD flavors to all fine retailers.

The other noteworthy title of the week is the release of NBC's "Masters of Horror" spin-off, "Fear Itself". I haven't seen all of the episodes in the set, mainly because NBC didn't air them all, but it's like all other horror anthology shows. Some episodes work, most don't. I've got a soft-spot for anthologies, though, so this is a rental queue jumper for me.

Frederick Loren: Ah, at last. The guest of honor has arrived. My love, I do so hate when you keep me waiting. Happy birthday!

Elisabeth: How very typical of a man to forget that my birthday is in February. And a party? Frederick, the only party you've ever offered to throw me is the one in your pants ... and I must say, I found it very unimpressive.

Frederick: Ah, she's so amusing! Isn't she, readers? I thank the heavenly host for bringing you into my life.

Elisabeth: You should thank Scott Weinberg. He's the one who introduced us.

Frederick: Indeed. You needed the money, and I can't pretend you'd adore me without it.

Elisabeth: Oh, I've never pretended to adore you. Shall we get on with it?

Frederick: That's just what you said on our wedding night. Yes, let's get on with it. What's this? You're without your customary drink of Guinness.

Elisabeth: It was a double feature, and it was late. Besides, darling, I wouldn't want to lose control of my faculties. I might wake up next to you again.

Frederick: Oh, I'm quite certain you wouldn't wake up at all, my dear. Tell me, what do you think of the atmosphere?

Elisabeth: It certainly looks creepy ... and I did ask Scott for a haunted house movie. They're the only thing that does scare me other than you, Frederick. But I've been listening to Pritchard's stories for about fifteen minutes now and I have a feeling that the movie isn't going to match up to a single one of them.
